What she's fought hard to learn over the years is that change is not something to be feared but something to be received as a blessing from a God who, more often than not, works through change, not in spite of it. Strong has learned to see change not as a grievance but as a grace. In this hope-filled book, she shows women how when we follow God's will, we receive blessings of contentment, purpose, and renewed strength. She encourages women to see change not as the end of their story but as the scenery for this part of life's journey.

I was watching the Today Show while getting dressed this morning and caught this piece on this woman who chucked a Wall Street career to essentially dig in the dirt. Her name is Audra Lawlor. Every morning now I hear the beep-beep-beep of construction equipment as yet more developments are given birth to in Chester County. We need more of that here.
In late January, , our daughter announced that she was pregnant with her third child. In her next breath, she told us that she and Adrian were moving to Tennessee with the kids. Since that day, my life has turned upside down and as I hovered on the brink of entering the 7th decade of my life, I left California to follow the grands. I hope I can find a good cup of coffee when I reach the other side.

Within the last few decades agriculture in San Juan County has been on the rebound. SJC farmers specialize in crops such as grass-fed meats, berries, tree fruits, and year round production of vegetables for market, as well as fiber, lavender, and herbs. They create value-added products such as jams, jellies, sauces and artisan cheeses. Increased construction of greenhouses and hoop houses have allowed year-round production of crops that would typically die in the cold winter weather, and also help production of heat-loving crops such as tomatoes, melons, and some herbs. We are a family-run farm with three acres under cultivation and a productive orchard. Alala Farm is dedicated to the practices of organic agriculture, and are proud to be growing for our family and community. We recognize that our collective future hinges upon sustainable land use.

Grew limbs through storms, gained strength with rain, rootedness with dirt under her fingernails. Seedlings rose, and bore fruit. And she watched, curious, hungry, craving a life anew, and learned the art of stretching bounty into winter. This is where the story begins -- with worn muddy boots and kitchen clogs -- a journey in stems, pear seeds, plum pits and apple flesh. A journey to the fruit of the matter and back, started on one island farmette. I've been waiting all month for the January doldrums - which I've come to count on annually to refresh and get my head back on straight after the demands of fruit season into holidays madness.
The business—Girl Meets Dirt—creates handmade, small-batch artisanal preserves that are designed for savory pairings with cheese or charcuterie. Lawlor walked away from a career on Wall Street, trading in the wilds of Manhattan for the pastoral scene of Orcas Island. She and her husband left without a clear plan, but Lawlor knew she wanted to live closer to the earth and do something where she could work with her hands. Lawlor had grown up in the Northwest—in Vancouver, Washington—and had spent time boating in the San Juan Islands with her parents. But surrounded by local fruit, she taught herself to preserve what the seasons provided.
